A High-Capacity Teapot for Extended Tea Enjoyment
We've created this generously sized teapot for those who wish to savour their tea time longer. Made with Banko-yaki, known for its excellent heat resistance, this teapot can be placed directly over a flame to fully draw out the rich aroma of tea.
With approximately 1-litre capacity, it features an easy-to-clean design that makes removing tea leaves simple. The handle is made from striking natural rattan material.
Mellow Hot Water, Heated Over Direct Flame
For brewing delicious tea, three elements are crucial: the amount of tea leaves and water, temperature, and steeping time. This teapot can be placed directly over a flame to heat water to 100°C—the ideal temperature for hojicha (roasted green tea). Additionally, water boiled in this earthenware teapot becomes mellower due to far-infrared effects. The pottery's excellent heat retention keeps water warm longer, and reheating is simple with its direct-flame capability. To achieve both heat resistance and a textured finish with glossy appearance and crazing effects, we repeatedly adjusted the ratio of raw materials and glazes. The result is a teapot with a rustic yet commanding presence. The white glaze offers a simple, refined impression that complements and highlights patterned teacups. The crazing (fine cracks that form in the glaze during firing) will gradually absorb tea colour with use. Please enjoy this distinctive pottery characteristic as it develops a beautiful patina over time.
Natural Rattan Handle, Handcrafted One by One
We've incorporated a rattan handle that feels smooth and comfortable in the hand. Each handle is bent and shaped by hand, making mass production impossible. Currently, there are very few artisans capable of crafting rattan handles, creating a critical situation for this craft. This particular handle was made possible through collaboration with an artisan from Shimane Prefecture who, concerned about the extinction of this technique, learned and mastered it personally.
From Flame to Table—Convenient Direct-Flame Design
This teapot can be placed directly over a flame to fully draw out the tea's rich aroma. The convenience of bringing it straight to the table after heating is another advantage. With its approximately 1-litre capacity, it eliminates the need to repeatedly boil water, allowing for extended enjoyment of tea time. The interior features minimal grooves for easy cleaning. The white glaze benefits from a sealing process before first use to moderate tea staining.
Banko-yaki: A Diverse Pottery Tradition
Banko-yaki is pottery primarily produced in Yokkaichi City, Mie Prefecture. Known for its excellent heat resistance, it commands a high domestic market share in earthenware pot production. The product range is diverse, including tagines, rice cookers, charcoal braziers, and various tableware and vases in many sizes and shapes. Development of technologically advanced IH-compatible earthenware pots is also active. Teapots, alongside earthenware pots, are one of the region's representative products. Using iron-rich red clay and reduction firing without glaze creates a tightly fired colour said to complement green tea well.
