【Things I Love】Flower Dishcloth

Our year-end ritual of changing over three kinds of flower dishcloth

One of our year-end rituals at home is checking the condition of our flower dishcloths and deciding which ones to replace.
It is over in no time, really, but when I take a proper look at the flower dishcloths after a year of use, I find myself thinking, “Well done this year,” both to them and to myself.

Though I simply call them all flower dishcloths, there are actually three kinds in our home.
Those still in service as fukin, those that have graduated from fukin to table cloths, and those that have gone from table cloths to cleaning cloths.

I use two as fukin, but even though I believe I treat them in much the same way, one may stay softer than the other, or one may begin to show more wear.

As I like to start the New Year by opening one new one, one of the two is moved on to become a table cloth.
And yet, when the time comes to make that change, I always find it hard to let go of a flower dishcloth that has softened so beautifully.

Even table cloths, after being put to full use on the table, around the sink, and by the hob, eventually become cleaning cloths. Still, I cannot help feeling reluctant.

And so, once again this year, I have prepared a new one by washing out the starch, and it is ready for the New Year.
