Shigaraki-yaki for Contemporary Dining.

A Shigaraki-yaki mug created in collaboration with a historic pottery house in Shigaraki. This piece belongs to our "Basic Set" tableware series, born from our desire to make distinctive Japanese ceramics from different production regions accessible for casual, everyday use in daily life.
While preserving Shigaraki's signature rustic character, we've crafted a simple silhouette that harmonises effortlessly with contemporary dining tables.

Handling Precautions

※Microwave safe
【Before Use】

To prevent dirt from getting into the crazing (fine surface cracks), we recommend the following sealing procedure:

  • Put rice washing water and the container in a pot and heat over medium heat
  • Just before it boils, turn the heat down to low and simmer for about 15 minutes
  • Turn off the heat and leave it in the rice washing water to cool to room temperature
  • Wash thoroughly and dry thoroughly
【During Use】
  • Avoid rapid heating and cooling as it is vulnerable to sudden temperature changes. Soaking in water to absorb sufficient moisture before use will help prevent stains and odors.
  • The bottom has a wide hama (unglazed area) without glaze, so if you put liquid in for extended periods without sealing, moisture absorbed by the body may seep out from the bottom. (Even with sealing, some moisture will be absorbed, so like other ceramics, it will feel slightly damp to the touch.)
【After Use】
  • Dishwasher safe, but hand washing is recommended for longevity. Be careful not to overcrowd as this can cause breakage.
  • Wash with a soft sponge as scrubbing hard with abrasive cleaners or metal scrubbers may cause scratches.
  • Avoid soaking. After washing, wipe with a soft dry cloth, dry thoroughly, and store in a well-ventilated place.
【Important Notes】
  • Be careful of chipping and cracking from strong impacts.
  • Stop using if cracks or fissures appear for safety reasons.
  • Crazing may develop with use, but this does not affect functionality and can be enjoyed as part of the item's character.
  • As this is handcrafted, there may be individual variations in color and shape.

Created in Collaboration with a Shigaraki-yaki Kiln Continuing Since the Edo Period

The Shigaraki-yaki series was created with Meizan Kiln, which has been making tea jars since the Edo period when they presented tea jars to the shogunate. Using Meizan Kiln's original "Meizan clay" - rough clay characteristic of Shigaraki yet with an elegant texture - they finished these as simple, contemporary vessels. While glazed for ease of use, the lower portion of the body is deliberately left unglazed so you can enjoy the natural character of Shigaraki clay.

Cups That "Mature" into Better Character with Use

Available in three colours: "Namishiro" (standard white), "Kihada" (yellow skin), and "Tetsucha" (iron tea). To preserve the Shigaraki-yaki atmosphere, we used glazes that create various expressions in colour and texture depending on the firing. With use, colour gradually penetrates the fine cracks (crazing) on the glaze surface, developing into a wonderful character. Please keep them by your side as everyday vessels and enjoy tea time and meal times together.
