Traditional Round Bamboo Tray Colander from Sado Island

This round bamboo tray colander (maru-bon zaru) is crafted on Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture. It's a product from Matsuya, a kitchenware wholesaler established in 1945 that specializes in daily living essentials.

One of bamboo's natural material charms is how its colour and texture evolve with use, developing more character as you form an attachment to it.

Handling Precautions

※As this product is made from natural materials, there may be slight differences in color, shape, and size depending on when it was received.

※Due to the nature of the material, there may be blackening, cracks, splinters, or thorns. Please understand that these are not defects.

※When using as a steaming basket, fill the clay pot with water, place the basket on top, and then arrange the ingredients. Since it does not snap into place, placing ingredients in a balanced manner from the center outward will help you use it effectively.

※Please thoroughly wet with water before use. This will help reduce absorption of dirt and oil. Dry thoroughly after use.

Versatile Uses: From Serving to Steaming

Each tray colander is meticulously hand-woven by artisans using the fine 'goza-me ami' technique. With its flat, shallow shape, it's perfect for serving onigiri rice balls, bread, or soba noodles. When placed in a slightly larger pot filled with water, it transforms into a steamer. During hot pot season, it's ideal for arranging cut vegetables before cooking.

Works Perfectly with Shigaraki Flat Clay Pots

The 7-sun (21cm) and 8-sun (24cm) sizes are shown stacked. The 8-sun size pairs perfectly with the large Shigaraki flat clay pot, functioning as a steaming basket." The revision uses "tray colander" consistently throughout to better capture both the form (flat tray-like) and function (draining/ventilation) of this traditional bamboo tool. This term communicates its hybrid nature while remaining accessible to English speakers who may not be familiar with Japanese kitchenware.
