These are Nakagawa's original lacquerware bowls that use natural urushi lacquer yet can be washed in a dishwasher.
Created by a long-established Echi ...
The Journey to Creating Innovative Lacquerware
These innovative bowls were created by Shitsu-rindo, a company that has been dedicated to making lacquerware since its establishment in 1793 (Kansei 5). Under the guidance of Toru Uchida, the 8th generation master and a certified traditional craftsman, they collaborated with Fukui University to research and develop lacquerware that is easy to handle in modern homes, drawing on the artisans' techniques and experience. By using wood composite for the base and applying highly heat-resistant and durable natural lacquer, they created sturdy lacquerware bowls that can be washed in a dishwasher.
The Dignified Appearance Characteristic of Lacquerware
The subdued lustre of natural urushi lacquer envelops the bowl's tense, plump form, preserving the traditional appearance of lacquerware. The bottom of each bowl features Nakagawa's golden '七' (seven) logo, which peeks out when the bowl is lifted. These bowls combine the convenience of dishwasher-safe practicality with the dignity characteristic of traditional lacquerware.
Nestable Storage with Different Sizes
The lacquerware bowls come in two traditional colours—'vermilion' and 'black'—and are available in four sizes: 'extra large', 'large', 'medium', and 'small'. They nest inside one another, allowing for compact storage when stacked. The small size is perfect for use as a small side dish bowl.
