Rice ears and sparrows were popular decorative motifs on Imari ware during the Edo period. Rice cultivation is an important annual cycle. Though familiar, it was likely depicted as a precious landscape, expressing hopes for its continued prosperity.
Drawing inspiration from this history, contemporary artisans have painted charming sparrows on these rice bowls. The sparrows have descended upon scattered grains from rice bundles and are busily pecking away.
