Onta-yaki is produced in Hita City in northern Oita Prefecture. Decorated with slip and glazes on red clay, it has a simple, warm, yet powerful appearance. This pottery became nationally renowned after Soetsu Yanagi and Bernard Leach visited the area and praised it as an embodiment of 'functional beauty' (yo no bi).

These small dishes showcase distinctive Onta-yaki patterns. Each features one of three traditional techniques: 'tobi-kanna' (where a plane is applied to the surface while the wheel turns), 'hakeme' (where brush marks are intentionally left after applying slip), or 'kushime' (where a comb-like tool creates distinct patterns).

These are paired with amber, white, or green glazes respectively to enhance their character.

Handling Precautions

Microwave safe.

[Before use]
To prevent staining in the crazing (fine cracks on the surface), we recommend performing the following "Medome" (seasoning) process:

1. Put the dish in a pot with rice water (water from washing rice) or water with flour, and heat over medium heat.
2. Just before boiling, reduce heat to low and simmer for about 15 minutes.
3. Turn off the heat and let it cool completely in the rice/flour water.
4. Wash well and dry thoroughly.

[When using]
Avoid sudden heating or cooling as it is sensitive to rapid temperature changes. Soaking the dish in water to allow it to absorb sufficient moisture before use helps prevent stains and odors.

[After use]
Dishwasher safe, but hand washing is recommended for longevity. Overloading may cause damage, so please use with care.
Do not scrub hard with abrasive detergents or metal scourers, as this may cause scratches. Wash with a soft sponge.
Avoid soaking. After washing, wipe with a soft, dry cloth, dry thoroughly, and store in a well-ventilated place.

[Notes]
Be careful of chipping or cracking due to strong impacts.
For safety, stop using the product if it becomes cracked. Crazing (fine cracks on the surface) may appear over time with use, but this does not affect usability. Please enjoy it as part of the product's character. As each item is finished by hand, there may be individual differences in color and shape.
