This rush grass pot mat comes from Sunami Toru Shoten, founded in 1886 with workshops in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture.

As a family business in Kurashiki – the birthplace of decorative rush mats (hanagoza) – they've been crafting rush products for generations. Fifth-generation artisan Sunami Takataka learned the traditional ""ikago"" basketry technique from his grandmother as a child, continuing to handcraft each piece with meticulous care.

The rustic, characterful pot stand uses igusa throughout, including the core, creating a thick, tightly woven, and durable construction. The woven pattern acts as a natural grip, providing stability for whatever you place upon it whilst offering generous support.
The distinctive igusa fragrance and charming appearance make it something you'll happily display even when not in use. At 18cm diameter, this medium size works perfectly with clay pots, cast iron cookware, and kettles.

For cleaning, simply wipe dry or use a damp cloth for stubborn marks – ensuring thorough drying afterwards is essential. Though igusa can scorch, watching it transform from initial green to golden amber through natural aging creates a uniquely personal kitchen companion that grows more beautiful with time.
