About Echizen Woodwork
Lacquerware production involves four specialised stages: wood base preparation, undercoating, lacquering, and gold lacquer decoration.
Whilst bowls and tea saucers are called ""round items"" (marumono), boxes and rectangular trays are known as ""square items"" (kakumono).
""Round woodwork"" uses lathe techniques to shape the form, requiring advanced skills like thin turning and decorative turning. ""Square woodwork"" involves combining boards of uniform thickness – a process demanding precise calculations and highly skilled techniques.
Both methods preserve Japan's exceptional woodworking heritage: deep wood knowledge and blade-sharpening mastery passed down through generations of skilled artisans. This expertise creates the distinctive wood grain beauty that defines Echizen woodwork.
Trays have been household essentials for centuries – serving, carrying, storing, gathering, and laying. Round trays come in two sizes: 8-sun (24cm) and 9-sun (27cm), each suited to different purposes. Corner-cut trays are also perfect as decorative display pieces in entrance halls.
27cm: φ27×1.8cm
