Shigaraki-yaki (Shigaraki ware), counted among Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, is often described as 'the art of earth and flame.' Its origins are said to date back to the Tempyo period, when tiles were fired for Emperor Shomu's 'Shigaraki-no-miya' Palace. During the Kamakura period, artisans crafted water jars, mortars, and pots. In the Muromachi and Azuchi-Momoyama periods, tea ceremony implements were produced in abundance. Production of various household items including tea caddies flourished during the Edo period, and today the craft encompasses a wide range of lifestyle products including tableware, flower vases, plant pots, and exterior tiles. This pottery develops a profound charm that grows more endearing with use.
These simple small dishes highlight Shigaraki-yaki's rustic character. Made using the 'tatara' technique—forming plates from slab clay—they are finished with three different glazes.
'Kohiki' showcases the clay's texture, 'Biidoro' glaze offers a beautiful glossy green surface, and 'Irabo' glaze presents a distinctive mottled brown skin. Each exhibits a warm expression perfectly suited for everyday use.
